Few days before the EURO, idol of the youngs

We need to remember that France’s success at Euro 1984 was heavily imprinted by Michel Platini and Le Carré Magique (The Magical Quadrangle) of which he was a part. Platini, Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana and Luis Fernandez created a memorable summer in France.
The first time these four players played together was in a friendly against England’s Bobby Robson at the Parc des Princes in February 1984.
Initially, the idea of a quartet in the middle of the French team was expressed by coach Michel Hidalgo in the 1982 World Cup, starting with the match against Northern Ireland in the second group stage. The quartet at that time was Platini. , Giresse, Tigana and Bernhard Genghini.
However, two years later, Hidalgo decided to replace Genghini with Luis Fernandez, who was born in Spain and only officially naturalized France in 1981.
In the quartet, Fernandez is the lowest player with the task of recovering the ball, controlling the rhythm and coordinating. Jean Tigana is a shuttle player, the lungs of midfield. Alain Giresse is only 1m63 tall, but in return is his mind, intelligence, sophistication and incredible passing ability. The other is Michel Platini, the soul of the team, although he plays as an attacking midfielder, he scores no less than a striker, who possesses the ability to dribble skillfully, with sharp touches.
This quartet is a combination of steel and softness. Platini is the leader, but the freedom he has on the field is thanks to the three teammates behind him. Their good point is that Tigana, Giresse and Fernandez can swap positions to create conditions for the team’s No. 10 to shine. The “magic” of this midfield quartet made the rest of Les Bleus players overshadowed, Platini’s excellence made one almost forget the French strikers at Euro 84.
Platini scored 9 goals at the tournament that year, still a record (later Cristiano Ronaldo equalized), including a goal in the final, helping Les Bleus to the championship.
